  • Notes
    • It is believed that Alexander's parents are Alexander Stewart and Catherine Montgomery. Alexander died 1712 in County Derry, Ireland.

They had two children Alexander and Mary. Mary may have married a Noble but no proof has been found to support this.

Following his death, Catherine remarried in 1713, County Donegal, Ireland to James Patrick Calhoun son of Rev. Alexander Calhoun and Lady Judith Hamilton.
      ***************************
Tradition has it that Alexander was twice married and had three sons John, Samuel and Joseph by his first wife.

By his second wife he had William, Archibald and Alexander. The names of his wives were uncertain and he may have had several daughters.

Alexander removed his family to America in 1758 before the Revolution. Also tradition has it that his oldest son John came to America before his father, around 1745, and was a clerk of the court of Lancaster Cty., PA. John was said to have changed the spelling of his surname Stuart for the better English Stewart. They resided in PA until about 1768 when they moved to York Dist., SC with the exception of John who stayed and raised his family in PA.
Alexander Stewart may have had several daughters and it is possible that there were more sons than are listed.
