  Joseph was born on April 1, 1734. He was the son of William and Mary Eleanor Echols Murphy. He was a dissenter, and left the Anglican Church to become a Baptist. He was baptised in 1757 at Deep River Baptist Church in Orange County, North Carolina. Joseph fought in the Revolution, from Surry County. Joseph married first, Valentine Haley, about 1750, probably in Surry County or possibly in Lunenburg County, Virginia. They had eight children and Valentine died before 1800. Joseph then married Catherine Thompson in Surry County on November 11, 1802. His will was dated September 7, 1814 in Surry County and probated in Surry County in August, 1816. Joseph died about 1814 at Deep Creek, Surry County, North Carolina. The location of his grave is unknown.
