He appeared on the 1830 census in Marlboro County along with his wife and one son who was between 5 and 9 years of age. Smith W. Dozier was a bond holder and one of the Administrators of his father-in-law, Charles Bright’s probate in Brightsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina. Smith W. Dozier died in 1831 before the probate of his father-in-law’s estate was settled and his own probate was filed in both Marlboro County, South Carolina and in Surry County, North Carolina. His father, Nathan Dozier, who lived in Surry County, North Carolina, list Smith W. Dozier as one of his 4 sons (Richard, John, Tully & Smith W. Doudge) in his will written in 1824. He is also listed as Administrator in the probate records of his brother Richard Dozier (Doudge) who died in 1821 in Rowan County, North Carolina. The name Dozier is often written as Doudge, Douge, Dossier, etc. in early legal documents.
