  • Notes
    • Married John Patty on 15 Apr 1862 in Calhoun Co., Alabama.

      Notes from Adline (Connell) Hulsey:
"The sun was in eclipse the day Martha Thomas Patty died. Martha and her husband, John Patty, are both buried in unmarked graves in Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, north of Fruithurst, Alabama in Cleburne County."

The following information is from contributor, Ray, to whom I am very grateful in sharing what he has found regarding my ancestors, John & Martha Thomas Patty.

"'The Thomas Family' (1940) by Prentice W. Thomas recorded a great deal of oral history from his father and grandfather, including the fact that his great-aunt Martha A.E. Thomas married John Patty. Also The Thomas Family: Descendants of Samuel S. Miles Thomas (2003) by Roy Isbell.

The 1850 census shows that she was five years older than her husband John Patty. After her marriage, she always claimed to be 10 years younger than she actually was. The Thomas women were known for their beauty and youthfulness, so she probably looked 10 to 20 years younger than her true age.

As for her birth place (and date):
1826-28: Her father Edward Thomas moved from Newberry, S.C. to Newton Co., GA.

1841-44 moved from there to Dadeville, Tallapoosa Co., AL.

1828: Edward's son David A. Thomas was born 1828 at Covington, Newton Co., GA.

1830 census: Family was in Newton Co., GA.

1840 census: Family was in Newton Co., GA.

1845: Family was in Tallapoosa Co., AL.

      1850 census: Tallapoosa Co., AL.
Since Martha A.E. Thomas was born in 1835 in Georgia, as the 1850 census shows and every census for her after that (not 1845 as her tombstone and the later censuses show, though all those censuses say Georgia), she obviously was born in Newton Co., GA. before the family moved to Alabama 1841-45.

In 1860 she was living with her older brother David Thomas in the Randolph Co., AL. Census listed her as "Eda" Thomas. They were both shown as 7 years younger than they actually were: he as 25 and she as 18 when they were actually 32 and 25 respectively. Since David Thomas was 7 years older than his sister Mary Ann Eda Thomas, this fact may have been stated to the census taker in some way which confused his report."
