  • Notes
    • Thomas Pugh Jr. was born circa 1758, he is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh, he along with his living siblings James, John and Peninah were named in his father Thomas Pugh's will dated 10 August 1794, proved February term of 1798.

      _____________________________________________________________________
There are those who argue that Thomas Pugh Jr. was the grandson of Thomas Pugh Sr. rather than son because of the age of his mother Elizabeth Pugh when Thomas was born (age 49), they completely overlook the fact that Thomas Pugh Jr's wife Eva Barbara Pugh was age 42 herself when their youngest child William Pugh was born.

At the time of Thomas Pugh's birth circa 1758, most all of the Pugh's living in that specific area of North Carolina were accounted for and were the children of Thomas Pugh Sr.

By the 1790 census for the entire state of North Carolina there were only twenty five Pugh's as Head of Household found and only four were named Thomas. In this census, one was a woman (Rachel Pugh), fifteen did not live in or near Randolph and were not related to, or named Thomas. Two had the first name of Thomas but were clearly not related as they lived in Bertie NC and had 63 slaves between the both of them, this leaves seven, there was a John Pugh (1) and Daniel Pugh (2) of Orange NC, a John Pugh (3) of Randolph (son of Thomas Pugh Sr. and Elizabeth Pugh), a James Pugh (4) head of HH Randolph NC (son of Thomas Pugh Sr. who with mother Elizabeth Pugh are living with him in the household), Jacob Pugh (5) of Chatham NC (son of Enoch Pugh, grandson of Thomas Pugh Sr.), leaving two men named Thomas Pugh, who were Thomas Pugh (6) of Chatham NC (son of Enoch Pugh grandson of Thomas Pugh Sr.) and Thomas Pugh Jr. (7) of Randolph North Carolina (son of Thomas Pugh Sr. and Elizabeth Pugh).

By the 1800 census for North Carolina Thomas Pugh Sr. had passed away and there were a total of thirty six Pughs as H of H for the entire state of North Carolina, four of which had the first name of Thomas, these were the same four from the 1790 census. (8) Pugh's in Bertie two of which were named Thomas Pugh not related to the Pugh's of Randolph, now with eighty slaves between the two of them, (3) in Orange, (9) in Currituck, (3) in Greenville, (1) in Hertford, (4) in Halifax, (2) in Johnston, (1) in Salisbury, This leaves five, (2) in Chatham NC, Thomas Pugh and his brother Jacob Pugh sons of Enoch Pugh grandsons of Thomas Pugh, and (3) in Randolph NC John Pugh, Thomas Pugh Jr., and James Pugh all three sons of Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh.

      * Thomas Pugh Sr. made his will in 1794, just four years after the 1790 census and six years before the 1800 census, looking at both census records the only Thomas Pugh that this Will could be referring to is Thomas Pugh Jr. in Randolph NC, he is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Pugh.

Thomas Pugh Jr. married Eva Barbara Amick circa 1782 this is based on their eldest daughters birth which was in the year of 1783.

According to a land deed between Thomas Pugh and John Husband, 13 Dec. 1790, Thomas Pugh was a Blacksmith by trade.

Thomas Pugh Jr. made his will on 15 December 1840, he left to his daughter Barbara and her husband Hugh Walker all the tract of land where Thomas was now living, with the stipulation that Hugh Walker give Thomas and his wife Barbara 1/3 of the grain raised on said land, keep up the fencing, and keep Thomas and Barbara comfortable. Thomas also requested that all the residue of his estate be sold and debts owing to him be collected and if there is any surplus that it be divided equally among his children. Thomas Pugh requested that his trusty friend Peter Julian be his executor.

Thomas Pugh died in the year of 1846 as his will was proved November term of 1846 Randolph North Carolina.

Thomas and Eva Barbara Pugh had ten children

      1. Elizabeth Pugh born 27 February 1783, married Thomas Ward
