  Thomas L Jr. Branson (Thomas L. , William , Nathaniel ) was born in 1703 in Springfield, Burlington Co., Nj. He died in Sep 1792 in Randolph Co., Nc. Battle of Guilford Courthouse - North Carolina - Revolutionary War March 15, 1781 After Tarleton's detachment from Cornwallis' army was nearly destroyed at Cowpens, SC on January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan knew Cornwallis with his 3,000 men would go after him with his whole force. Morgan retreated, and Gen. Greene with the main army moved to join him. Cornwallis destroyed all tents and unnecessary wagons and provisions, and vigorously pursued Morgan into North Carolina. When Greene's and Morgan's troops joined, Morgan left the army siting health reasons. On February 13th, Greene crossed the Dan River in Virginia to safety. The Carolinas and Georgia were in British hands, but Cornwallis was 250 miles from his base of operations at Winnsboro in the middle of winter. Cornwallis withdrew into North Carolina. Greene followed and the North Carolina militia joined him. The Virginia militia also joined Greene, and Steuben sent some the Continentals he was training from Virginia. Greene settled down into a defensive position at Guilford Courthouse and offered battle. His deployment was somewhat similar to that of Cowpens. The North Carolina militia was on the first line behind a rail fence and facing an open field with cavalry and other reliable troops on their flanks. About 300 yards behind the North Carolina militia was the Virginia militia, which would be protected on the flanks by the same flanking troops from the front line when they withdrew. About 500 yards behind the Virginia militia was the main line composed of Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware Continentals. Judge Frederick Branson of Missouri said his ancestors owned the land at Guilford Court House in North Carolina where the battle of the Revolution ary War was fought March 15, 1781 between General Green's Continental troops and the British forces under Cornwallis. This ancestor was probably Thomas L. Branson, born 1703, died Randolph County, NC 1792. The Guilford Courthouse is a National Military Park today. Thomas married (1) Elizabeth Norton on 20 Dec 1782. Thomas married (2) Rebecca Borden daughter of Benjamin Borden and Zeuriah Winter in 1731. Rebecca was born about 1710 in Hopewell, Prince George, Va. She died in Nc.
